The island is home to a protected mangrove swamp on its northern side, recognised as a nature reserve for its unique vegetation and the many protected bird species that use it as a sanctuary. An IUCN study identified ten varieties of trees in this area, including true mangroves and associated plants. Traditionally, the community relied on fishing, but in recent years tourism has become the island’s main economic focus, especially with the rise of local guesthouses attracting visitors to Huraa.
